The state of São Paulo registered 1,021 new deaths caused by Covid-19 this Tuesday (23), the record in 24 hours since the start of the pandemic. The number equates to three deaths every four minutes.

The state now totals 68,623 deaths caused by the coronavirus. The data was posted on the Health Department website this morning. Generally, the information is released in the evening by the state administration.

The previous record, recorded last week, was 679 deaths in one day, representing one death every 2 minutes in the last 24 hours.

The new records do not necessarily mean that the deaths occurred overnight, but rather that they were computed in the system during this period.

Notifications are usually lower on weekends, holidays and Mondays, due to the delay in accounting.

Last Friday (19), the Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo, Jean Gorinchteyn, admitted that the government planned to register 800 daily deaths in the coming days.

This Tuesday (23), in an interview with GloboNews, Gorinchteyn regretted the index, but defended that the value does not represent a direct image of the last 24 hours.

“Although they are shocking, because they are lives that have been lost, they do not portray these 24 hours. They are data that was impounded, strained during the weekend and now abruptly added to the data on Tuesday,” said the secretary.

He also said that the rate of social isolation is still very low and demanded that the population unite.

“Decreasing the circulation of people is also reducing the circulation of the virus with it. (…) We are always crying out for help, but we still see people on the streets,” he said.

One week after the start of the emergency phase, effective from the 15th, the isolation rate increased by only 1%. On March 14, the state registered 50%. On the 21st, 51%.

The number of patients admitted with Covid-19 increased 113% in the state of São Paulo in just one month, as shown in the video below.

In this second (22), 29,039 people occupied beds destined for the disease. On February 22, there were 13,606. The indices for this Tuesday (23) have not yet been published by the state administration.

Of the total number of patients currently hospitalized, 16,871 are on the ward and 12,168 are in Intensive Care Units (ICU).

The number of people in the ICU in São Paulo is more than three times higher than in Argentina as a whole, which has a population similar to that of the state with approximately 44 million inhabitants.

Bed occupancy rates in the beds of the Intensive Care Units (ICU) in the state of São Paulo also exceeded the rates recorded at the peak of the 2020 pandemic.

On Monday, the average occupancy reached 91.9% in the state of São Paulo, compared to 77.2% at the most serious moment of the pandemic last year, at the end of May.

The index was 91.6% in the Metropolitan Region of the capital. In Greater São Paulo, the rate is close to the record registered in May 2020, when occupancy reached 92.2%.

On March 10, the São Paulo government had already warned of the difficulty of serving the population, since the rate of new hospitalizations is greater than the rate of discharge.

Deaths waiting for beds

At least 135 people with Covid-19 or suspected of the disease could not resist waiting for an ICU bed and died until this Monday (22) in the state of São Paulo. The survey is the G1, gives TV Globo what if GloboNews.

Among the victims, there is a three-year-old boy, a 25-year-old girl, with no previous illnesses, in the interior of the state, and a 22-year-old boy in the city of São Paulo.

The cities with the highest number of deaths in the queue are Greater São Paulo, Taboão da Serra and Franco da Rocha, with 15 each.

The patients were registered in the state transfer regulation system, but did not resist until the vacancy arrived, according to the Ministry of Health.

Since March 15, the state of São Paulo has been in the emergency phase, the most restrictive of the economic flexibility plan. The measure was taken to try to contain the advance of the coronavirus in the state.

However, mayors of several municipalities have even demanded stricter social isolation measures, such as confinement, since the municipal health system already suffers from a lack of beds and oxygen supply.

Despite the election, the management of João Doria (PSDB) defends that the strictest rules must be determined by the local administrations themselves and has ruled out implementing the measure throughout the state.
