Senator José Maranhão (MDB-PB), 87 years old, died today (8) in São Paulo due to complications from covid-19. On Monday, the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM-MG), decreed an official 24-hour mourning for the death of the senator from Paraíba.
After voting in the second round of the municipal elections, the senator fell ill and was taken to the hospital to be examined. On December 3, he was transferred to the Nova Star Hospital, in São Paulo, with respiratory failure caused by covid-19, a condition that turned into viral pneumonia.
José Maranhão’s body will be transferred to Araruna (PB), his hometown, where he will be buried.
José Maranhão was the oldest senator in the current legislature. His alternate, Nilda Gondim (MDB-PB), will assume the Maranhão seat in the Senate. Since January, Nilda Gondim was in office. The mandate of the list runs until 2021.
Maranhão was a businessman and lawyer graduated from the Federal University of Paraíba. He served as a state deputy on four occasions (1955-1969), he was a federal deputy in three legislatures (1983-1995), including during the National Constituent Assembly. He was currently the state president of MDB.
In 1994, Maranhão was deputy governor of Paraíba during the Antonio Mariz government and took office when Mariz died in 1995. He was reelected in 1998. In 2000, José Maranhão was elected for his first term as senator. In 2006 he ran again for the state government, but lost to Cássio Cunha Lima. With the impeachment of Cunha Lima in 2009, Maranhão returned to the post of Governor of Paraíba. In 2014 he was elected senator for the second time.
José Maranhão is the second senator to die from covid-19. In October 2020, Arolde de Oliveira died after about a month in the hospital.
