The Senate today approved a bill that temporarily suspends payments students must make to Fies (Student Finance Fund). Now, the modified text will go to the Chamber of Deputies.
The bill intends to amend Law 10,260 of 2001 to allow payments to be suspended during the validity period of the state of public calamity. Fies finances undergraduate courses for students of private institutions of higher education.
The suspension period can be extended by the Executive Branch. The rapporteur of the matter, Dário Berger (MDB-SC), gave a favorable opinion to the project of the deputy Denis Bezerra (PSB-CE) and offered a substitute in which he received 10 amendments presented in the Senate.
However, it is worth mentioning that the invoice in question may allow for the suspension of payments only for students who are up to date or, at most, with arrears of up to 180 days.
Health professionals with six months of work in the fight against coronavirus, such as doctors and nurses who are in the categories with permission to receive mitigation in the Fies plots, were also included. The fund could reduce up to 50% of the monthly amount due to Fies by these health professionals.
