While science doesn’t come up with a specific treatment or specific vaccine to prevent Covid-19, health professionals care for patients with what medicine offers. There is no single answer and everything depends on the evolution of the disease in each one. Ten people of different ages, professions and neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro, who were contaminated and managed to beat the coronavirus, told EXTRA about the healing process. Medicated with antivirals, antibiotics, chloroquine, antipyretics or other remedies, they have in common, in their reports, the support of friends and family and the pain of absolute isolation imposed on the patient.
– As treatment, I was prescribed azithromycin and ceftriaxone, but what made the difference the most was talking to my daughter and my granddaughter by video call, on the cell phone of a doctor – says Idalzina Santos de Souza retired, who, even at 91 years old , I managed to eliminate the new coronavirus: – I want to resume daily activities and re-practice my physical exercises. I have always been active.
In the state, until this Saturday, the Health Department represented 6,828 cases, with 615 deaths. Of this total, 3,144 were recovered. In the capital, of the 4,481 infected, 2,394 are already cured. The neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro with the most recovered patients are Barra (157), Copacabana (129) and Leblon (96).
According to the Ministry of Health, in Brazil, of the 58,509 diagnosed patients (an increase of 10.4% from Friday to Saturday), almost 28 thousand have already recovered. As of this Saturday, 4,016 people in the country had died from Covid-19.
From Thursday to Saturday, 1,110 deaths were reported in the country, more than a quarter of the total registered, showing a tendency to accelerate the disease in Brazil.
Barbara Bittencourt, 35-year-old lawyer: “The disease has affected the neurological system”
The miner, who has lived in Rio for 12 years, says her case was rare, as the virus became lodged in the brain. From March 14 to 21, she had mild symptoms of the disease, such as mild difficulty breathing, fever, and cough. On the 21st, she went to a private hospital and was discharged. The next day, she lost her taste and smell, and started having a lot of body pain and migraine. On the 29th, she went to another health unit with a fever, but was again sent home.
– On the 30th, I woke up with mental confusion and my husband took me to the hospital. I went directly to the ICU, being unconscious until day 2. The disease was positive in the neurological system. To improve, the treatment with acyclovir (antiviral) was carried out, says the lawyer, who was discharged on the 6 and 16, received the test result indicating that it was cured.
Fortunately, she wants to help. Therefore, it participates in a study carried out by the Albert Einstein Hospital on the neurological impacts of the disease.
Idalzina Santos de Souza, 91, retired: “What made the difference was talking to his daughter and granddaughter”
The 91-year-old Bahian retiree was released on the 16th, after 10 days in a private hospital in Barra da Tijuca. A Botafogo resident, the old woman says that on March 28 she passed out at her home and was taken by the family to an emergency room in Copacabana, but the same day she was released. A week later, she began to feel tired, with shortness of breath and nausea, when she was rushed to the hospital:
– There they found pneumonia and the new coronavirus. As treatment, I was prescribed azithromycin and ceftriaxone, but what made the difference the most was talking to my daughter and granddaughter by video call, on a doctor’s cell phone, she says.
Idalzina says that the moment is one of hope:
– I want to resume daily activities and return to practicing my physical exercises. I have always been active.
Camila Pereira, 31-year-old biologist: “With union, we can overcome this disease”
Barra resident Camila Pereira admits that she underestimated the disease when, on April 3, the first symptoms began: indisposition, body pain and fever. The young woman, who has asthma and obesity, says that on Easter Sunday, she lost her sense of smell and taste, in addition to having started to have nausea and diarrhea:
– I ordered the Covid-19 test in a private laboratory and it was positive. My experience with the disease was complicated, since I had various symptoms, such as conjunctivitis and urticaria. To improve, I took antibiotics, he notes.
From the disease, he learned lessons:
– It is time to have collaborative and caring attitudes. It is not a simple disease, but with the union we can overcome it, he says.
José Alexandre Araújo, 42-year-old urologist: “Thank you for hugging the person I love again”
With no history of illness and a daily routine of physical exercise and healthy eating, José Alexandre began having symptoms of the disease on March 18.
– Five days later, I was hit by severe shortness of breath, but was not admitted. Empirically, I took azithromycin, chloroquine and dipyrone, and 14 days later, I was better – reports the doctor, who happened to see life differently: – I was trapped in my room, wearing a mask, without touching my wife and children . The worst thing about the disease is having the notion of worsening, I lost 5 kg in less than a week. Today I thank you for hugging the person I love again.
And he concluded:
– I think about how fragile life is and that we need to give value to those who are on our side.
Rafael Maiolino Bloise, 33-year-old musician: “I feel out of breath even 43 days later”
The Niterói resident returned from a business trip to Bahia on March 8 and began experiencing mild symptoms on day 10. On the 12th, Rafael was examined for Covid-19 and, two days later, the result was positive.
– Before presenting the symptoms, I visited my parents and grandparents. The result was that the whole family took it, my father was the most serious case, since he spent three days in the ICU. To improve, the recommendation was the use of an influenza and antibiotic, he reports.
Rafael warns about the importance of taking the virus seriously:
– I am focused on recovery, as I still feel out of breath, even 43 days after the first symptom. The relief is that my family members are healthy, he says.
José Bernardo Neto, 54-year-old micro-entrepreneur: “Without family support, the trajectory would be different”
Without pre-existing diseases, the press officer and micro-entrepreneur José Bernardo Neto spent 20 days with the disease, eight of them hospitalized:
– In less than ten days, I acquired pneumonia, the doctors diagnosed that 20% of my lungs were infected. The feeling of shortness of breath was intense, I went directly to the oxygen in the ICU. My vital signs were low, I was hospitalized for eight days, three with oxygen. To improve, a treatment with chloroquine, azithromycin and amoxicillin was performed, he says.
In addition to medical treatment, he says family support was essential:
– Without the support of my family, this path would be different.
Ana Giulia Ricciardi, 18-year-old student: “I needed help from friends and family”
The resident of Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the West Zone of Rio, began to experience the first symptoms of Covid-19 on the day the universities decided to suspend classes, on March 13.
– I passed the virus on to my mother, who is 50 years old. I have never seen her so ill, it was very difficult to see her in the ICU, incommunicado. I was left alone at home, I needed the help of my friends and family to get food and support, because I couldn’t leave the house, she remembers.
The mother was in a more serious condition and underwent antibiotic treatment, but Ana was not hospitalized:
– On the recommendation of a doctor, I took throat lozenges and pain relievers – he says.
Mônica Henriques França, 46-year-old intensive care doctor: “It is a feeling of rebirth”
An intensive care doctor, the Vila da Penha resident is delighted to remember the healing process. He says that on March 27 he quit his job to get a flu shot with his daughter. Two days later, when he woke up, he felt a strong pain in his body. Until new symptoms appeared, such as fever and fatigue:
– I did the test for Covid-19, whose positive result came out a week later. Isolated, she was very symptomatic. And I quit my job April 29-12. I took dipyrone and azithromycin.
For her, winning the disease was like winning the lottery:
– My biggest fear was infecting my mother, who is an old woman and a smoker, and my daughter, who is 14 years old. Winning this war is a feeling of rebirth. I say I won the lottery of life. What touched me the most was not touching them.
Jhordana Ventura, 31-year-old actress: “I appreciated the little things”
Goians living in Flamengo say the first symptom was a severe headache that lasted two days. Soon, he began to feel short of breath and lost his sense of smell and taste:

– I came to think that I would no longer meet my family and friends in person, but by video they reassured me and gave me strength. I was very touched when I improved, I appreciated the little things, like smelling the shampoo and the taste of the food.
Gabriela de Saboya, 40-year-old journalist: “I slept almost 23 hours straight”
Gabriela, a resident of Ipanema, says that at first she seemed to have the flu. The first symptoms appeared on March 23. However, when he reached a constant feverish state of 38 degrees, he began to worry:
– I sought care in a hospital and when I got tested, the record fell. I was short of breath, I was tired, I slept almost 23 hours straight. To get better, I took medicine for fever and pain, he says.
Gabriela says she changed some behaviors after having Covid-19:
“I am taking more care of my food, I do lung exercises daily to regain my aerobic capacity,” he says.
