An SBT report was shown on Monday night (27), with journalist Roberto Cabrini, who reported on the chaos Manaus is experiencing during the new coronavirus pandemic. He described the scenes seen in hospitals as a “distressing world”.
The journalist visited the hospital on August 28, in the Adrianople neighborhood, and showed the reality of health professionals, who, according to a nurse, have not received their salary for 4 months, need to remove the protective equipment from their own pocket and have an exhaustive workload. In addition to financial and pollution problems, professionals who report being psychologically affected by seeing so many deaths.
The structure of the hospital was another topic explored; there are no separate rooms for suspected and confirmed cases for Covid-19. Bodies are placed on the floor and containers, which had already been placed in 4 hospitals in Manaus, even before the system collapsed.
In Intensive Care Units, the flow is large, but according to nurses, there are more people recovering than dying.
In cemeteries, which had four times as many burials per day, families questioned relatives who had not been confirmed with the Coronavirus, but were being buried with victims of the disease.
Roberto Cabrini went to public spaces in the city and witnessed dozens of people who did not respect the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), how to maintain a distance of at least two meters, avoid overcrowding and wear protective masks. At the Betânia fair, in the South Zone of Manaus, a vendor even confirmed that he would not join the use of masks because “he did not want to”.
Supposed price premium
The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, was received by the journalist to speak about the accusations of alleged overpricing on devices. Cabrini asked Wilson about the motivation to buy respirators at a wine store on April 8, 2020, at a value four times more expensive than those sold domestically and imported, and without a tender; Lima explained that the store is authorized to sell health equipment and made purchases immediately because the state urgently needed it. The Prosecutor’s Office investigates the alleged overbilling.
The president of the Union of State Doctors of Amazonas (Simeam), Mário Vianna, was also interviewed and said that the governor may end up committing genocide, since the equipment purchased is not suitable for patients in serious conditions; Wilson said he made the purchases because they would be equipment that can be carried more easily into the Amazon, if necessary.
In addition to respirators, hospital rent was also reported.
The journalist finished the edition of Conexão Repórter, advising manauaras to wear protective masks, which is one of the main tools to avoid contamination and that the dead should not be remembered as statistics, since each victim has a biography that must be preserved
