The Ministry of Health reported on the night of Monday 7 that it advanced in the negotiations to buy 70 million doses of the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech against covid-19. “The terms are already well advanced and should be finalized early this week with the signing of the memorandum of intent,” the portfolio said.
Representatives from the ministry and laboratories met to discuss the memorandum on Monday 7. The vaccine is administered in two doses. There are no details on the expected value for each dose.
Latin American countries with which Pfizer has already closed deals expect to start vaccination this month or early 2021, depending on approval from local regulatory bodies. The UK wants to start vaccinating the population this week.
The ministry had been pointing out that the minus 70 degree temperature for the storage of the Pfizer vaccine was a barrier to incorporating the product into the SUS. Pfizer says it has a plan for transporting and storing doses: a 5,000-dose, temperature-controlled package that uses dry ice. The vaccine would last 15 days.
The ministry has already invested around R $ 2 billion to receive and start producing doses of the vaccine developed by Oxford / AstraZeneca. In addition, it allocated R $ 2.5 billion to receive doses for 10% of the population through the Covax Facility consortium.
