The São Paulo government announced last Tuesday (22) that the entire state will have strong restrictions during Christmas and New Years. With this, only essential services will be able to function during the windows of December 25, 26 and 27 and January 1, 2 and 3.

In practice, it is as if the entire federative unit were in the red phase of the São Paulo Plan during these two windows.

On these six specific days, face-to-face service is prohibited in shopping centers, stores, dealerships, offices, bars, restaurants, gyms, beauty salons and cultural events establishments. The parks are also closed. Pharmacies, markets, bakeries, gas stations, laundries and hotel services are free.

At a press conference at the Butantan Institute without the presence of Governor João Doria (PSDB), the Secretary of Economic Development of São Paulo, Patricia Ellen, affirmed that the government must make “this difficult decision” so that the state’s situation does not worsen .

Regarding the probable agglomerations on the beaches of the São Paulo coast at the end of the year, the government says that the responsibility lies with the municipalities, but that it seeks to dialogue with the municipalities to maintain the “austerity that the moment demands.”

The rest of the days, the entire state remains in the yellow phase, the third of the five stipulated by the SP Plan. The exception is the Presidente Prudente region, with 45 municipalities that return in an extraordinary way to the red phase as of the 25th and remain until the next reclassification in January. The occupancy rate of the ICUs (Intensive Care Units) for Covid-19 in the Prudente region is 83.1%.

It was also announced that the state will not return to the green phase in January, as expected. Staggered reclassification was rescheduled from January 4-7. As the new mayors take office on the first day of 2021, the state government will hold meetings starting on the 4th to present the SP Plan.
