This Friday (8), the governor of the state of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), announced the extension of the quarantine until May 31. In practice, with this decision, only essential services can operate. The cause of this extension of isolation is basically the increase in the number of cases and deaths from COVID-19, since the number of confirmed cases in the state is 41,830, a value 5% higher than that registered on Thursday (7 ). The longer the distance rate is below 55%, the greater the need to maintain quarantine in the 645 municipalities of São Paulo.

“As governor of São Paulo, I would like to give you different news, but the scenario is bleak. We will have to extend the quarantine until May 31. We want to be able to announce the gradual resumption of the economy soon, as foreseen in the São Paulo Plan, ”said the governor. “The worst case scenario is the one that combines deaths and recession. Adopting quarantine, as we did here in São Paulo, is not an easy task. But it is about protecting lives at the most difficult and critical moment in the history of this country. Our decision to extend quarantine is the decision for life, “he added.

It is worth noting that the last technical meeting of the 16 members of the Coronavirus Contingency Center took place last Tuesday (5). The recommendation to the State Government to extend the quarantine was unanimous. In the last 30 days, the spread of the disease increased 3,300% in the interior and the coast and 770% in the capital. “There is no doubt, from the point of view of the Contingency Center, that these measures should be extended due to the severity of the moment,” said Dimas Covas.

During the press conference in which João Doria revealed the extent of the quarantine, data from a study by researchers from USP and Unicamp were presented indicating the impact of isolation on reducing deaths in the country. In São Paulo, between May 8 and 21, researchers estimate that 3,346 lives are saved. In the metropolitan region of the capital, the bed occupancy rate for patients with coronavirus is 89.6% in the ICU and 74.9% in the ward, while the state rates are 70.5% and 51 , 3%, respectively. In order for São Paulo to be able to leave quarantine without putting the health system at risk, the hospital occupancy rates for COVID-19 must be less than 60%.

This was not the first time that the Governor extended the quarantine. On April 17, João Doria made a live broadcast on social networks, extending the isolation until May 10:
