The Municipality of São Paulo announced this Thursday the 13th, the opening of schools of the day February 1st. Schools will be able to reopen at 35% of capacity initially. Aparecido pointed out that the City Council will control the transmission of covid-19 in sentinel schools. “We will choose in the area of the 28 health surveillance units a school that will be monitored and we will have all the data of students, staff and parents. This school will be a benchmark for us in that territory ”, he said. “Health surveillance recommends selective return to school for the entire school system, with the capacity of 35% of this equipment. It is possible that all units will work again, but with a maximum capacity of 35% ”.
The return to regular classes in private schools in the capital is allowed from February 1. The sector, which has seen enrollment drop since it closed last year, was pushing for reopening. With the long time without classes, part of the private early childhood education units in the capital ended up closing the doors.
In the municipal network, teachers must return to school to receive and plan activities from February 1, but the return of students should only occur from February 15. “The risk group of teachers and students with comorbidities is not returning at this time. Temporary teachers have been hired,” Padula explained.
He said there will be a check on the 4,000 schools in the company or partner network to see if the schools can reopen. “Not having, we will not open.” Municipal schools must operate for 5 hours a day. The return will be mandatory for teachers who are not part of the covid-19 risk group.
For students, the return is optional, according to Padula. Family members will be consulted on the intention to return and the secretary hopes that the confidence of the parents of the students with the face-to-face return will increase over time. “This is a construction process. People are afraid, insecure and little by little we are going to build security and show that face-to-face school is necessary.”
Padula also said that Mayor Bruno Covas must sign a letter to the Health Minister on Thursday requesting that education professionals be prioritized in the covid-19 vaccination plan. The face-to-face return to schools is resisted by teachers, who fear contamination and ask to return only when professionals are vaccinated.
