The government of Rio Grande do Sul announced today that the entire state has passed the red flag of the Controlled Distance Model adopted since the start of the covid-19 pandemic, an unprecedented event in recent months. Governor Eduardo Leite made no secret of his concern over what he called a “difficult time” and admitted a second wave of contamination from the new coronavirus in the state.
In a video published on social networks, Leite anticipated that he will meet on Monday afternoon (30) with representatives of the municipalities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul to define the measures to be taken. Despite the seriousness of the moment, the gaucho governor said he will try to “affect the economy as little as possible.”
“We are going to work to affect our economy as little as possible, recognizing the importance of the economy continuing to turn, but also calling everyone to responsibility to avoid aggravating this situation,” Leite said.
With the red flag applied to the 21 regions of Rio Grande do Sul, the 11.3 million inhabitants of the state are now under a moment of attention on the worsening of the pandemic. In total, there are 497 municipalities.
“It is an alert that is presented in our state, in the same direction as what is happening in other states. In fact, we are experiencing a second wave of coronavirus here in Rio Grande do Sul and also in other regions.” [do Brasil]”Leite commented.
According to the State Health Secretariat, the state is experiencing its peak of hospitalization in clinical beds and ICUs during the pandemic. In the last month, from October 30 to November 26, Rio Grande do Sul had a 26% increase in the number of hospitalizations for covid-19 and a 30% increase in ICU admissions for SARS (acute respiratory syndrome severe).
In the same period, the number of patients hospitalized in clinical beds with COVID-19 increased by 54% and deaths from the disease increased by 31%. The rate of free beds measured by the gaucho government model is the lowest since the beginning of the pandemic.
