A fire at the Hospital das Clínicas de São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, left one person dead this afternoon. Three other people were injured. Firefighters from three barracks worked to fight the flames and remove patients.
According to the Fire Department, the fire started in the building’s CTI, which is located on the fifth floor. Witnesses say the fire started after a loud explosion was heard inside the private health center. The patients were transferred to other wards of the hospital itself. The flames are already under control.
The Secretary of State for Health, Carlos Alberto Chaves, made the Alberto Torres State Hospital, also in São Gonçalo, available to receive patients or provide the necessary support.
Almost two months ago, a fire hit the Federal Hospital of Bonsucesso, in the north of Rio. Two patients who were hospitalized in serious condition did not resist the transfer and a third death was registered the same day of the fire. Other deaths were recorded in the following days.
At least since 2019, the HFB was aware of the fire risks: the DPU (Public Defender) reported that two transformers were operating with overheating, lack of electrical system structure and inoperative hydrants.
