The Rio City Council decided, by a simple majority, to stop the indictment process against Mayor Marcelo Crivella (Republicans) this Thursday (3). By 25 votes against 23, the councilors decided to reject the proposal.

The discussions lasted almost 4 hours, in a hybrid session, face-to-face and remote, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

There were unusual moments, such as a councilor wearing a Flamengo shirt, a councilor participating remotely in the session in a car and another eating popcorn in the plenary session of the Chamber.

The complaint presented to the Chamber was based on RJ2’s revelation about the existence of “Guardiões do Crivella” – a group in a chat application created to try to silence the work of journalists and avoid complaints from the population about the precarious situation of municipal health.

In total, the Chamber has 51 councilors and the vote was by simple majority: for approval, the majority of the votes of the parliamentarians present was sufficient.

Fourth request for impeachment

This was the fourth impeachment request voted against Crivella. One was accepted and two were rejected. One of those who did not succeed was the case known as “Talk to Marcia.”

In the episode, Crivella was caught advising evangelical leaders to find a servant so that the faithful would have preference in the queue of municipal and federal hospitals.

Tarcísio Motta, PSOL councilor, recalls that one of the arguments for rejecting the accusation of “Fala com Márcia” was that there was already a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on the subject.

Currently, there is also a CPI to investigate “Guardianes de la Crivella” – with a government majority, as demonstrated by the G1 on Wednesday (2).

Guardians of the Crivella: Get the Case

Officials of the City of Rio, paid with public money, are on duty at the gates of municipal hospitals to disturb reports and prevent reports of health problems, as shown by RJ2 on Monday (31). The scheme was combined into groups of messaging applications. One of them called “Guardians of the Crivella”.

The top of the municipal government is part of one of the groups. In the list appears the telephone number of the mayor of Rio, Marcelo Crivella. The journalist Edimilson Ávila has already addressed the mayor on this issue. A witness told RJ2 that Crivella sent messages congratulating the actions.
