The Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB) officially announced on Saturday (12) the candidacy of Bruno Covas for reelection to the City of São Paulo. The announcement was made during a convention held in two formats, face-to-face and virtual, this Saturday.

Councilor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) will be the candidate for deputy mayor on the Covas ballot. The PSDB also launched 83 candidates for the position of councilor in the city of São Paulo.

Bruno Covas voted around 10 a.m. this Saturday in the PSDB board of directors located in the Vila Formosa and Tatuapé regions, in the East Zone of São Paulo, to endorse his name as PSDB candidate for the São Paulo executive .

Bruno Covas said he chose to vote for the East Zone directory because it is considered by the oldest party in the country, having been frequented by Mario Covas, Bruno’s grandfather.

He was accompanied by Ricardo Nunes and the Governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB).

At the age of 40, Bruno Covas was born in Santos, on the São Paulo coast, and is the grandson of the former governor of São Paulo Mário Covas. Lawyer, he graduated in Law from the University of São Paulo (USP) and also in Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Católica (PUC) of São Paulo.

Elected deputy mayor in 2016, he assumed control of the city of São Paulo in April 2018, when João Doria left office to run for state government.

In his political career, Covas was a state deputy and served as Secretary of State for the Environment during the administration of Geraldo Alckmin in the state government, between 2011 and 2014.

He was elected federal deputy in 2014 and left office in 2017, when he agreed to run with Doria on the PSDB ticket to the São Paulo City Council.

The mayor was admitted for the first time on October 23, 2019, when he arrived at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, in São Paulo, with erysipelas (infection in the leg), which progressed to deep vein thrombosis (clots) in the right leg. The clots have risen to the lung and have caused what is called an embolism.

During tests to locate clots, doctors found cancer in the cardia, a region between the esophagus and the stomach, with metastases to the liver and lymph nodes. The mayor went through chemotherapy and immunotherapy sessions.

In June 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, Bruno Covas was diagnosed with Covid-19 and worked at home for 2 weeks, until he recovered from the disease.

On August 7, the latest medical bulletin released by the team responsible for cancer treatment in Covas reported that the mayor would continue to conduct immunotherapy sessions. The ninth treatment session was held on August 12. Doctors said at the time that he “is in good health and free to carry out personal and professional activities without restrictions.”
