The singer Paulo César Santos, Paulinho, a member of the group Roupas Nova, died on Monday night (14), at the age of 68 years. He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Copa D’or Hospital, in the South Zone of Rio, struggling with the complications of Covid-19.

The information of the death was confirmed by the press office and the health unit of the band. The hospital also said it did not have family authorization for further details.
Last month, Paulinho was hospitalized with Covid-19. In September, he underwent a bone marrow transplant to treat lymphoma. The patient’s own cells were used in the procedure. He responded well to treatment, but then had to be hospitalized again to treat Covid.
In a post on social media on Monday (14), the band reported that their condition was delicate.

More than 40 years ago, he headed the Roupas Nova line-up, which debuted in the 1970s as Os Famks. Later, the group would still be called Os Motokas before receiving the definitive name, after signing a record contract in the 80s.
His voice has become one of the main marks of the band. Paulinho assumes the lead voice on hits like “Canção de Verão”, “Sensual”, “Back to me”, “Wings of Pleasure” and “My universe is you”.

He was also the group’s percussionist, in addition to composing songs like “Assim como eu” and “Fora do ar”, along with other members.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1952, Paulinho performed at dances in Rio before joining the Famks.
With Serginho Herval, Kiko, Nando, Ricardo Feghali and Cleberson Horsth, he helped transform the Outfit into a phenomenon in the early 1980s.
The group was established from the second album of their career, released in 1982, with the classic “Clarear”, which became the theme of the telenovela “Jogo da vida” (TV Globo).
It was the beginning of a career that would make Roupas Nova a telenovela record, with more than 30 songs selected for television shows.
With the group, Paulinho has already shared a voice with names like Ivete Sangalo, Zélia Duncan, Elba Ramalho, Zezé di Camargo and Luciano and international artists, such as the American soul band The Commodores.
Paulinho leaves two children: Pepê, drummer for the band Jamz, revealed on the SuperStar (TV Globo) program, and the singer Twigg.
