A video recorded at the Hospital e Pronto-Socorro Doutor João Lúcio Pereira Machado, in Manaus (AM), shows three people, including two elderly, next to a body in the isolation room for patients with covid-19. The body appears wrapped in a plastic bag and was placed on a stretcher. On a paper label it is reported that the victim, a 78-year-old man, was admitted to the hospital at 10:43 pm last Wednesday (16).

The scenes were filmed by the daughter of one of the patients who is admitted to the unit. “Look at the absurdity where my father was placed here in João Lúcio and there is still one dead here. Since the early morning, one died here,” says the woman, who released the video to denounce what she called “negligence.”

TO Twitter, the State Department of Health classified the episode as a “unique situation” and stated that it will investigate the responsibilities for what happened.

The case occurs at the same time that the Amazonian government announces the reopening of new clinical beds and ICU (Intensive Care Unit).

Currently, Amazonas has 5,049 deaths from coronavirus and 189,812 cases of the disease.

Given the new trend of the pandemic, the number of hospitalizations has grown again and has put pressure on the health system, where there are currently 500 people hospitalized.

At the Delphina Aziz Hospital, a benchmark in the treatment of patients with covid-19, the occupancy rate of ICU beds reached 93% yesterday.

Amazonas, one of the states that concentrated the highest number of deaths and cases of the new coronavirus, was also one of the first to have the public network collapsed in the first wave of the health crisis.

Between April and May, for example, the capital of Amazonas concentrated the highest incidence rate of the disease in the country. At the time, the city was the only one in the state that had ICU beds.

At that moment, images of corridors and rooms with bodies waiting to be removed along with patients and stretchers on the floor became recurring images.

“Punctual situation”

In a note sent to Twitter, the Secretariat of Health of the State of Amazonas reported that the direction of the Hospital and Emergencies Doctor João Lúcio Pereira Machado clarified that the case in which the elderly appeared with a body was a “punctual situation.

According to the statement, the three patients expected to be transferred to the referral unit for covid-19 care in a room separate from other hospital users to avoid contamination risks.

In the folder version, the patients were transferred to another ward that same day.

“One of the patients arrived in very serious condition and died shortly after being admitted to the unit. The body cannot be immediately transferred to the morgue due to the risk of biological contamination and it remained isolated long enough to adequately prepare the place for conditioning of patients who die from covid-19 ”, justifies the secretariat.

Also according to the note, among the measures adopted, the hospital has activated a pink room and is reorganizing its care flows to receive patients with suspected SARS who come to the unit.

“Professionals and other workers who work in shifts are receiving training and guidance so that the flow is fully utilized and with less risk of contamination in the unit.”

The folder also indicates that the opening of new beds concluded today.

“This Saturday (12/19), SES-AM put into operation ten more ICU beds at the Delphina Aziz Hospital, a benchmark in the treatment of patients with Covid-19. By Friday night (12/18) another ten beds had already been put into operation. The unit now has 140 beds and, as of 10 am, had an 82% occupancy rate, ”he reported.
