Dozens of passengers on a United Airlines flight experienced moments of despair after a man died on the plane. The victim’s wife told paramedics that she had symptoms of Covid-19.
The plane, which left Orlando for Los Angeles last Monday, made an emergency landing in New Orleans after the crew learned of the passenger’s health. The man’s wife said that he was scheduled for an exam to see whether or not he had the disease caused by the coronavirus.
Reports from other people aboard the plane say the man was shaking, sweating and having trouble breathing before takeoff. After the emergency landing, medics were allowed to board the plane, but the passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to the airline, the man and his family lied about their health when completing the flight form. Several passengers questioned the company’s protocols after the incident.
Passenger Jo LaFlame also commented on the situation. She mentioned that the man sitting behind her on the flight “died of a covid.” “How do you know that you are a covid? Why did the woman confirm it while talking to paramedics?” He wrote. In another post, he criticized the flight resuming on the same plane with everyone exposed to the viruses.
Another passenger, Robert Reves, reported that initially everyone thought he had died after cardiac arrest. “But his wife quickly said that he had trouble breathing, that he did not experience any taste or smell,” he wrote.
Tony Adalpa was the passenger who was most involved in the situation. He told TMZ that it took 45 minutes for doctors to board the plane. At that time, some people tried to revive the victim.
“We did not do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, we were doing chest compressions and they put an oxygen mask on him,” he said, who knew at the time that the man could have covid-19. Still, he chose to help paramedics get the victim off the plane.
“I knew about the risks involved in performing CPR on someone with a potential for COVID, but decided to do it anyway. I spoke to the passenger’s wife about his medical history and she never mentioned that he was ill, but she said she had a test scheduled in Los Angeles, “he said in a series of posts on Twitter.
Adalpa also said that he had an exam and is asymptomatic. You are now awaiting the result of a second covid examination.
United Airlines is now contacting all 179 passengers on the flight to alert them to possible symptoms. On a note, the company regretted the episode.
“Our flight was diverted to New Orleans due to a medical emergency and paramedics took the passenger to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. We contacted his family and expressed our sincere condolences for his loss.”
