One person died and three others were injured on the afternoon of Thursday (24), Christmas Eve, in the fire that occurred inside the São Gonçalo Hospital and Clinics, In the city center.
According to firefighters, at 1:26 pm the teams of group 20 were summoned for the fire that would have started on the fifth floor of the building. In addition to fighting the fire, ventilation was necessary to speed up the removal of smoke from inside the unit.
“The employees asked us to abandon the visit, but did not give details. Only when we left did we understand what was happening, ”said tire repairman Carlos da Silva, 51, who was visiting a patient.
According to the hospital management, the patients were transferred to another floor and the fire was already controlled. However, one of the hospital employees is said to have inhaled smoke and must be transferred by ambulance to the Icaraí Hospital in Niterói, which belongs to the same chain of hospitals.
Firefighters have not yet released the identity of the fatal victim, who died of charring. There is also no information on what would have caused the accident and the number of beds that work on the floor.
Marcelo dos Santos, heard the news in the press and rushed to the hospital to obtain information from his aunt who was admitted to the unit after suffering a stroke.
“It is worrisome for everyone, nobody expects it to happen to a loved one, but thank God nothing happened to my aunt,” he said.
The Mobile Emergency Service (SAMU) provided ambulances to provide support.
The case will be investigated by the Mutual Police Station (72 DP) and will be in charge of the Delegate Allan Duarte.
Calls in hospitals
In September 2019, a fire in the Hospital D’Or Hospital Badim, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, left 13 dead, as confirmed by the hospital unit at the time. In October of that year, the flames also claimed three deaths in another fire, this time at the Bonsucesso Federal Hospital. The deaths as a result of the accident were confirmed by the Ministry of Health.
