On the eve of the elections, a shootout between police and drug traffickers in Madureira leaves a woman dead, closes streets and generates panic

RIO DE JANEIRO – On the eve of the second round of the elections, a woman died and at least two other people were injured in an intense shooting this Saturday afternoon in Morro da Serrinha, which created a climate of tension throughout the neighborhood of Madureira, in the North Zone of Rio. Liliane Rodrigues da Costa, 33, arrived at the Emergency Unit (UPA) in Irajá, but did not resist, according to the State Health Secretariat. Pietro David Alvez and Daiane Ribeiro Queiroz were treated and later released.

According to preliminary information from the Military Police, police from the 9th BPM (Rocha Miranda) were shot by criminals from the top of the community while patrolling Avenida Ministro Edgard Romero. Police officers from the Special Rounds and Crowd Control Battalion (Recom) and the Shock Battalion were called to work in the region.

Terror in the region garnered dramatic reports in videos posted on social media on a busy Saturday afternoon in the region’s trade. One of the images showed a woman who would be Liliane entering a UPA on a stretcher. The scenes and audios of the intense filming also multiplied. According to G1, Mercadão de Madureira even had to close earlier, after a suspect entered the shopping center to escape the PM, causing disturbances between customers and merchants.

– We closed the store at 5:00 pm, but at 4:30 pm we decided to lower the doors, for security reasons – confirmed a store owner.

There were also impacts on traffic in the region. In the middle of the afternoon, a group of residents of Serrinha went down to a protest on Edgard Romero Avenue, one of the main in the region. According to information from the Rio Operations Center (COR), the road was temporarily closed shortly before 4 in the afternoon, and again had blockages, in both directions, around 6 in the afternoon, due to the police operation.

BRT Transcarioca had its circulation interrupted, between the Manaceia station and the Galeão International Airport. From inside one of the stations, a passenger posted a video showing people protesting and blocking traffic. Other images showed a man lying on Edgard Romero’s asphalt, but the prime minister did not confirm whether the scenes were related to the operation.
