Obese people constitute one of the main risk groups associated with new coronavirus. When reaching one in five Brazilians (19.8% of the population), the obesity requires care and special needs in today’s setting.
Experts heard by the report of the R7 They warn about the risks for overweight people and give advice on how to deal with the pandemic more safely.
Obesity also requires special attention because it increases the chances of diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes, other conditions favorable to the evolution of covid-19, as noted by Matheos Chomatas, coordinator of general medicine and public health at the Faculdade Evangélica Mackenzie do Paraná.
“The obese, even the young, have the same or more risk than the elderly. For this reason, it must behave more carefully during the pandemic, “says Chomatas.
Renato Grinbaumm, infectious disease specialist and member of the SBI (Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases), warns that if infected with covid-19, obese people can present serious conditions with greater risk than those who are not. “The care measures are the same as the others and it is essential that they be followed,” Grinbaumm guides.
According to Chomatas, although the guidelines remain the same: social distance, hand washing, healthy eating habits and hydration, this specific group should be more cautious since it is a risk factor. It also indicates that, for a healthier life, during the pandemic or not, “it is necessary to find the most appropriate weight.”

In addition to food and medicine, maintaining a physical exercise routine can help, especially during labor. It is worth remembering that being overweight affects just over 55% of the Brazilian population, indicating the need for care not only for obese people.
For Matheos Chomatas and Renato Grinbaumm, the best way is to look for exercises at home, following the WHO (World Health Organization) guidelines for social isolation.
