Emmanuelle Charpentier me Jennifer A. Doudna won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, announced the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Wednesday (7), for the discovery of the Crispr, genome editing method. Charpentier spoke to the press shortly after the award was announced and responded to a question about her and Doudna as the first women to jointly win the Nobel Prize.
“I would like to send a positive message to girls who want to follow the path of science. I think we have shown them that, in principle, a woman scientist can have an impact on the science they are doing. I hope Jennifer Doudna and I can send a strong message to girls, “he declared.
The winners will share the amount of SEK 10 million (around R $ 6.3 million).

Before Charpentier and Doudna, five women had already won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Marie Curie (1911), Irène Joliot-Curie (1935), Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin (1964), Ada E. Yonath (2009) and Frances H. Arnold (2018).

With the victory of the two scientists, the Nobel Prize already has three women winners this year. The first was Andrea Ghez, who shared the award with two scientists for their research on black holes.
