The city of Niterói will fine R $ 180 for all people who are on the street, next week, without a specific need, such as going to the pharmacy, the market or a health unit. The measure was announced by the mayor, Rodrigo Neves, on Thursday night (7), during an internet broadcast.

The ban is backed by a decree approved by the City Council, which details the decision: “It is prohibited for anyone to stay and transit on roads, beaches, equipment, places and public squares, within the municipality of Niterói, from May 11 until on May 15, 2020, which can be extended for an equal period, out of step with the temporary measures of social isolation established by the municipal executive power due to the covid-19 epidemic. ”

According to the law, there will be exceptions, such as the hypothesis of “displacement of the labor force, to go to health services or pharmacies, to buy food supplies and the like essential for subsistence, as well as to go to establishments authorized to operate ” Those who work in the city of Rio de Janeiro must show a work permit or badge in order to transit.

According to Rodrigo Neves, who does not call for the closure measures, only five trade branches can open in the city: markets, pharmacies, bakeries, service stations and pet stores. The inspection, both of the establishments and of the people on the streets, will be the responsibility of the Municipal Guard, which will have the power to fine, which will be doubled in the event of recidivism.

“There are five activities that are the most essential for life and will be the only ones allowed, from Monday to Friday next, from May 11 to 15,” said Rodrigo Neves.

The mayor also emphasized that the blockades with the other municipalities that border Niterói, including the measurement of the temperature of the people, will be reinforced and refer people with fever to health units.

“We have to take measures in a reflected way, based on science, on empirical observation, on the case study of international experiences that worked. What we are going to do is what we are already doing during these weeks, to save lives, preserve our health system and allow people to resume economic activity as soon as possible, “he said.

According to the latest bulletin from the State Department of Health (SES), Niterói has 524 cases of covid, with 35 deaths.
