New Tourism Minister calls for closures

BRASILIA – Taking over as the new Tourism Minister on Thursday, Gilson Machado Neto said the sector cannot take further action to shut down the economy, despite the increase in the spread of the new coronavirus. Citing the case of Búzios, which had a confinement determined by the Justice, Gilson made an “appeal” so that government officials do not make the same decision.

– President, I cannot (not) take advantage of this moment to make an appeal. Today we had an example from Búzios, which was closed without prior notice. If I’m not mistaken, by a first instance monocratic decision. It was neither the mayor nor the government. The (tourist) trade cannot take a second decree of confinement – said the new minister, during a ceremony at the Planalto Palace.

The blockade in Búzios was determined by the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice on Wednesday, due to an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases. Judge Raphael Baddini stressed that there is “a very high risk of collapse of the health network and the need for complete social isolation.”

In this Thursday’s event, the new minister reported having spoken with the governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, who had promised not to carry out a confinement. The same request was made to the governor of Alagoas, Renan Filho, present at the ceremony.

– I appeal to the governor (Renan Filho), do not enact a closure. The day before yesterday I made an appeal to the Governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara. He recorded a video with me saying that there will be no confinement in Pernambuco. Our craft can’t take it anymore. The tourist entrepreneur, who generates employment and income, now fears a decree more than the disease itself.

Gilson Machado replaces Marcelo Álvaro Antônio, who was fired last week after a disagreement with the Minister of the Government Secretariat, Luiz Eduardo Ramos. Gilson was president of the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur).
