The mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo, posted on his Instagram a photo in line at a supermarket this Friday night. In the caption, he asked, “Does it make sense to close the supermarket at 8 pm?” On Thursday, he even asked Governor Eduardo Leite to extend the time in supermarkets, but he was not attended to. The schedule was determined by the State Government, which prohibited activities between 8:00 pm and 5:00 am due to the collapse of the health system in Rio Grande do Sul.

Starting this Saturday, Porto Alegre will adopt the criterion of the black flag, the most critical level of the Controlled Distance model of the State Government. Melo said he did not agree with the decision: “I respect the governor’s decision, but I do not agree. We will continue working to open beds and save lives. But we cannot put aside the lack of income and employment that suffocates Porto Alegre ”.

On Friday night, Porto Alegre had fewer than 20 ICU beds available, an occupancy of 98%. Of the 827 intensive care patients, 433 had been diagnosed with Covid-19. Another 50 were considered suspicious cases. According to data from the Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS), 126 people with the coronavirus were waiting for a place in the ICU.

Also according to SMS, the coronavirus has already infected 103,568 people in the capital and is related to 2,385 deaths of city dwellers.
