On New Year’s Eve (31), Manaus had 124 people hospitalized with Covid-19 in a 24-hour period, the highest number since the start of the pandemic, according to data from the epidemiological bulletin FVS-AM (Health Surveillance Foundation) Amazonas ).
Two days earlier, Manaus had already broken the record for hospitalizations, with 112 hospitalized in 24 hours. Until then, the day with the highest number of hospitalizations was May 4, at the peak of the pandemic, with 105 hospitalizations for Covid-19.
After the repeal, last Monday (28), of the decree that restricts trade and non-essential services until January 10, the state government began the installation of containers with cold stores to store the bodies of the victims of Covid-19 in reference hospitals and tents for the detection of patients and assistance to relatives.
On another front, the Manaus City Council announced the preparation of a new land in the largest municipal cemetery, with the opening of space for more than a thousand graves, and the construction of funerary boxes to meet the demand for burials, which in December was 21%. higher than in the same month last year.
According to Semulsp (Municipal Secretariat for Urban Cleaning and Public Services), December was the third month with the highest number of burials in 2020, after May and April. There were 1,081 burials, an average of 34 per day. In April they were 2,433 and in May 1,899.
The first container was installed at HPS (Hospital Pronto Socorro) Platão Araújo, in the east, on Wednesday (30), to house the administrative sectors, which gave way to a new wing of beds within the unit.
On Thursday (31), containers with cold stores were installed in the HPS 28 de Agosto, in the south-central zone, and João Lúcio, in the east. According to SES-AM, in the next few days, containerized cold rooms should also be installed in the HPS Platão Araújo and in the Delphina Aziz Hospital, in the north.
In addition to the containers, the state government announced that it will install permanent death chambers in the morgues of the emergency rooms in Manaus. At HPS August 28, the chamber will be expanded.
Recommendation not taken
Also on Tuesday (29), the control bodies of the state of Amazonas, such as the MPE (Public Ministry of the State), MPT (Public Ministry), the DPE (Public Defender of the State) and the DPU (Public Defender of the Union) delivered a letter to Governor Wilson Lima (PSC) with the recommendation to close non-essential shops and services, such as shops, malls, bars, restaurants, floats and nightclubs while the occupancy rate of the exclusive beds of the UCI for Covid- 19 in the public network is above 85%.
On the day the recommendation was made, the occupancy rate for the ICU Covid beds in Manaus was 92%. Lima even announced on social media that the recommendation would be evaluated by state technicians, but they ignored it.
The next day, new ICU beds were opened in public hospitals and the occupancy rate reported by FVS-AM fell to 85%. On New Year’s Eve (31) the ICU bed occupancy rate for Covid was 81% on the public network.
In the private network, the rate continued to increase and, on Thursday (31), it was 93% for ICU beds and 91% for clinical beds. At least 7 of the 11 private hospitals in Manaus have already announced that they have reached the maximum capacity of beds.
Despite the drop in the occupancy rate in the public network, the state government does not rule out the possibility of a halt in commercial activities in the coming days.
According to the state health secretary, Marcellus Campêlo, the contingency plan has five phases and, with the revocation of the decree and the increase in hospitalizations, it was necessary to advance the fourth phase. The fifth phase, according to him, provides for the suspension of all non-Covid medical care and the cessation of all non-essential activities.
“If the people are not aware of the need to avoid crowds, there will come a time when the state will not be able to serve everyone,” warned Governor Wilson Lima.
The epidemiologist of Fiocruz Amazônia, Jesem Orellana, affirms that the ideal was that a greater restriction had been imposed in early November, especially due to the commercial and festive season.
“We would have stopped the spread of new contamination and, at the end of December, we would not have to close the trade. To do this at Christmas and New Years is to shoot the economy in the neck, “he said.
But given the current scenario of lack of control, the researcher defends a more severe restriction on the circulation of people and non-essential services and businesses to avoid a greater collapse of the health system, as happened in May. “Now what you see is chaos. Records of new hospitalizations, collapse of the hospital network, sharp increase in deaths and all kinds of absences ”.
The government of Amazonas even issued a decree prohibiting the operation of non-essential businesses and services from December 26 to January 10, but it was revoked two days after its entry into force, after a series of protests with agglomerations led by merchants. and businessmen against the measure.
