Maguito Vilela (MDB) was elected mayor of Goiânia this Sunday (11/29) with 52.6% of the votes, defeating Vanderlan Cardoso (PSD), but he still does not know it.
That is because, since November 15, the day of the first round of the municipal elections, Maguito has been unconscious, being treated for covid-19 in an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at the Albert Einstein Hospital, in São Paulo.
At 71, the emedebista tested positive for covid on October 20, when he had mild symptoms.
Before that, in August, she had lost two sisters to the coronavirus in less than ten days: Nelita, 82, and Nelma, 76.
Within a week, the politician’s state of health worsened greatly. Maguito reached a critical level of oxygenation, with up to 75% of the lungs compromised by the virus, and was transferred, by family decision, from a hospital in Goiânia to Albert Einstein.
On October 30, he had to be intubated for the first time for respiratory failure. Since then, his image has changed considerably.
After improvement, the tube was removed on November 8 and the candidate was awake and conscious, breathing on his own. This lasted until November 15, when Maguito woke up more out of breath than usual, with difficulty breathing.
The then candidate fell asleep that day without knowing that he would go to the second round of the elections in the first place, along with Vanderlan Cardoso, defeated this Sunday.
According to a medical report released by Einstein this Sunday afternoon, Maguito “is tracheostomized, sedated and connected to mechanical ventilation with satisfactory oxygenation parameters.”
The tracheostomy was adopted since November 17, to protect the politician’s respiratory system, since prolonged intubation generates risks, such as throat injuries and damage to the vocal cords.
According to the hospital, the emedebista’s health is serious, but stable, and he undergoes continuous hemodialysis (filtration of blood through devices, when the diseased kidney cannot perform this function on its own).
According to the press officer for Maguito’s campaign, he was unconscious on Sunday.

With Maguito out of the picture since October 18, when he began to show symptoms of the disease, his son Daniel Vilela, president of the Goiás MDB and national vice president of the legend, took the lead in the campaign, disputing attention with the candidate to vice president. Pastor Rogério Cruz (Republicans).
Before being elected mayor of Goiânia, Maguito had a long political career. He was a councilor in Jataí (GO), a state deputy, a federal constituent deputy, deputy governor and governor of Goiás, a senator and twice mayor of Aparecida de Goiânia (GO).
In 2007, he was appointed by the then Minister of Finance, Guido Mantega, as vice president of Banco do Brasil. Along with his son, he was mentioned in the deliberations of the Odebrecht executives, accused of having received R $ 1.5 million in cash for the campaign.
At the time, both he and his son denied the charges and said they did not know the complainants.
According to information from UOL, Maguito does not have any high prognosis. To the relatives, the doctors say that the candidate should spend a good part of December sedated. After that, you will be in ICU for a while.
Also according to the portal, citing lawyers, if the politician remains hospitalized until January 1, the deputy mayor takes office and Maguito will take over after his recovery. In the case of the death of those chosen between the end of the dispute and the day of the investiture, the vice also assumes.
