A preliminary study carried out at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital, in São Paulo, in critically ill patients with covid-19, showed that the use of the anticoagulant substance heparin contributed to the improvement in blood oxygenation levels and also in the lung function. thus reducing the length of stay in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit).

The experience was coordinated by pulmonologist Elnara Negri, professor at FMUSP (USP Medical School), and also had the participation of other doctors at the institution. According to the article published by the group, 27 people with an average age of 56 years and with pre-existing diseases such as diabetes, heart problems and obesity, underwent experimental treatment.

The average length of hospital stay varied from 10 to 15 days, taking into account the particularities of each case, with no deaths recorded so far and only three remain in the ICU of the private health unit.

The research identified that the drug, which has been used in the prevention and treatment of thrombosis, was fundamental in the process of unblocking the blood vessels of the respiratory system, which represented a drop in the period when these people needed the help from mechanical respirators. . With the first results, they now intend to expand the study after approval by Conep (National Council for Research Ethics)

The drug is considered inexpensive and, if it continues to show satisfactory results, it could become an important ally in the search for an effective treatment against covid-19.
