Julie McSorley and Liz Cottriel calmly navigate the waters of Avila Beach when they were swallowed by a humpback whale.

The two friends were paddling at a distance of thirty feet from the whales, when a bait net appeared alongside the pair. “As soon as I saw that fish ball come out of the water, I saw the whale come up,” Liz said.

“Suddenly they picked me up and I was in the water,” Julie said. “I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to push.’ Like, ‘I’m going to push the whale out of the way.’ It was the strangest thought. Then I thought, ‘I’m dead. I thought it would land on me, ”Cottriel recalled.

Many people who witnessed the moment believed that the women had been swallowed by the whale, but in reality, the two friends ended up being only sunk by the animal and soon returned to the surface alive and uninjured.
