The parliamentarians who are part of the temporary external commission of the Senate created to monitor the actions to combat the fires in the Pantanal made a visit today to Mato Grosso, a state that houses part of the biome.
The group left Cuiabá (MT) for Poconé, for a visit to a shelter for animals affected by the fire, on the Transpantaneira Highway. There they traveled some 40 kilometers from the region affected by the fires. They met with representatives of farm and inn owners, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and scientists.
During the meetings, the senators defended the Pantanal Statute. “It is federal legislation, specific to the Pantanal biome, which can guide state and municipal laws, both in Mato Grosso and in Mato Grosso do Sul so that with this union something can be produced so that the Pantanal has its sustainable development, not we have an imbalance, as is happening today, “said the chairman of the commission, Senator Wellington Fagundes (PL-MT).
Fagundes described as “devastating and desolate” the scene seen by the group in the face of the destruction of the fauna and flora of the Pantanal. “Today the situation in the Pantanal is a state of war. Brigades and volunteers are working in a superhuman way due to the lack of planning. We do not get into science and technology for this,” he added, attributing the problem of fires to a lack of planning of the federal government.
Parallel to the diligence, another group of senators who are part of the commission today held a remote meeting (19) to discuss the situation. “We have been out of the commotion for a long time. It is not today that we see the Pantanal devastated. But never something like what we are seeing right now. The atmosphere screams for help. We are outraged that we are living this moment without the necessary support for Prevention It is time to act and the message is that this Commission will not end without giving a concrete word, ”said Senator Simone Tebet (MDB-MS).
The commission created this week will send invitations to the ministers Ricardo Salles (Environment), Tereza Cristina (Agriculture) and Rogério Marinho (Regional Development) to participate in a public hearing in the collegiate to discuss the issue.
The idea is that, at the same table, the man from the Pantanal, representative of the indigenous community, environmentalists and representatives of the agribusiness, of the agribusiness, is heard. “It is useless talking to equals,” said Tebet.
Vice president
Also today, the Vice President of the Republic, Hamilton Mourão, came out in defense of the government’s actions in the fight against fires in the region. Through a post on Twitter, Mourao assured that the government of President Jair Bolsonaro “does not tolerate illegalities and maintains constant efforts to ensure that environmental criminals are treated in accordance with the law.”
