A 95-year-old doctor died earlier today, the day he started the vaccination campaign against covid-19 in the city of Mutuípe, Bahia. Divaldo Brandão, also known as Dr. Divaldo, would be the first inhabitant of the municipality to receive immunization in the stage that will only include health professionals.

According to relatives, the doctor died at home while he was sleeping. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The body of Dr. Divaldo was veiled in the morning at the town hall and buried around 5 in the afternoon in a cemetery in Salvador. With the death of the doctor, a nursing technician was the first person to be vaccinated against the new coronavirus in the city.

On a note of regret, the Municipality of Mutuípe mourned the death of Brandão, the municipality’s first doctor since 1952. That year, he led a vaccination campaign against an outbreak of typhoid fever in the region at the health post.

“It is with regret that the Municipality of Mutuípe reports the death of the servant Divaldo Brandão (01/20/21). The death of Dr.º Divaldo, a true leader, an active example in the construction of Mutuípe, a man who dedicated himself for many years saving lives, he leaves a legacy of joy with his always contagious smile. A professional of excellence. To family and friends our deepest feelings and the desire that his good examples are always alive in our memory “, says the statement.

In a social network, Silvia Brandão, daughter of the doctor, reported that yesterday she was contacted by the municipal administration, who thanked him for the initiative to honor him.

“They wanted to know if it would allow him to be the first to be vaccinated against covid-19 in the municipality. This fact is quite emblematic. I considered the tribute well deserved, even as an incentive and example for everyone who knows and respects it,” he wrote.

“We are very honored, your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and grateful for the tribute you would pay my father today.”

“Stick for all work”

Born in Salvador, Divaldo Brandão graduated in Medicine in 1951 from UFBA (Federal University of Bahia). A year later, he moved to Mutuípe, where he worked as a general practitioner. “He told me once that he wanted to be a pediatrician. She ended up being an ‘interiorologist’, a generalist, a ‘stick for everything’, she wrote.

Among the difficulties she faced at the beginning of the contract, Silvia says that her father needed to cross the Todos-os-Santos bay to travel to the interior.

“He took a boat from Salvador to São Roque do Paraguaçu and then a train to get to Mutuípe. Many hours of travel. Branda had never lived in the interior. He was a boy from the big city, going out and partying. Therefore, his colleagues and family members were betting that he would not return soon. Ledo’s mistake. Mutuípe won the doctor’s heart, “he explains, who shared a newsletter announcing the arrival of the young doctor in the city.

Also according to the daughter, to attend to patients in rural areas, Dr. Brandão used the “horse back” as a means of transportation for many years. “He faced moments of extreme anguish and difficulty. Difficult deliveries, malnourished children, trauma, deep wounds, tropical diseases with severe patients affected by typhus, schistosomiasis, Chagas disease, smallpox and so many other storms ”, he says.

Silvia says that she regrets that old age prevented her from carrying out her “mission.” “My old man left in the arms of the Creator. He goes towards the Light because it is the place where he deserves to be,” he published.

In total, Mutuípe has ten deaths from covid-19 and 776 confirmed cases of the disease.
