“He was an example of a father, husband and professional. His passion was to wear the uniform and help people ”. This is how the artisan Débora Pinho Melo, 27, wife of the corporal of the Military Police Diogo Gomes de Melo, described her husband, who drowned on Tuesday (29), when he tried to save four children at sea in Itanhaém, in Sao Paulo coast. The information is from UOL.
Débora tells the story that the family decided to take advantage of Diogo’s free time on the beach. She and her husband, their 9-year-old son and three nephews, two 12 and 13, were playing in the water when they noticed the waves starting to get stronger.
“Since the kids and I couldn’t swim, we were at the shallow end, but at one point the wave knocked us down. I took out my nephews and told them to go to the sand strip, and when I looked back I saw my son drowning and Diogo trying to help him, ”says Débora.
She says that, even without knowing how to swim, she went to the sea and tried to go to where her husband and son were, when she realized that Diogo was also drowning.
“He held my son up so he wouldn’t drown, but the sea dragged him to the bottom and he no longer had the strength to swim. I started screaming and some people who were on the beach came to help us. A man entered the sea and managed to catch my son, Diogo disappeared into the water. Everything went very fast ”, says the craftsman.
Diogo Gomes de Melo, 31, was part of the Operation Summer operation in Baixada Santista. Firefighters were called to rescue him at 4:20 pm, but they did not find him.
Around 5:10 p.m., another team from the corporation was called in to help with the location of a body at sea. Upon arriving at the scene, it was found that the body was that of the missing police officer.
The victim was transferred to the Itanhaém Emergency Unit (UPA), but death was confirmed in the unit. The case was registered in the 2nd PD of the city.
Diogo was veiled and buried on Wednesday (30), in the São Vicente Metropolitan Cemetery, where he was born. President Jair Bolsonaro was present, on vacation in Guarujá.
“It was a very big surprise. Diogo was a very good person, he deserves to be remembered, ”says the policeman’s wife. “It is thanks to him that my son is alive. He was a hero, ”says Débora.
