2019 hospital fire killed 25 patients
In September 2019, a fire hit the Badim Hospital, in Maracaná, North Zone of Rio, and caused the death of 25 patients. No deaths were due to burns, most of them due to smoke inhalation and complications from electrical power outages following the power outage in the building.
In November of last year a fire broke out at the Balbino Hospital, in Olaria, also in the North Zone. The fire reportedly started on the seventh floor of the hospital, in an administrative room where there were no patients, and was quickly brought under control.
This year, twice the patients were scared at the Lourenço Jorge Municipal Hospital, in Barra da Tijuca, in the West Zone. In the early morning of October 1, a short circuit in the circuit breaker started a fire, which was controlled by the unit’s employees, even before the arrival of firefighters.
The next day, again a lot of smoke and a strong smell of burning led to the emergency evacuation of the unit. However, on the second day, the Municipal Health Department denied the beginning of the fire and reported that the entire electrical panel of the unit was checked.
