In times of quarantine it is very common for people to be anxious. At these times, food ends up becoming the best ally. Often, lack of routine also compromises meal times. Even if you have a healthy and balanced diet.

According to endocrinologist and member of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (Sbem), Dr. Flavia Tessarolo, eating time makes a difference for those who want to maintain weight or lose weight.

“There is no use knowing how much and what to eat if you don’t know when to eat. This means that it is extremely important to have certain times for meals and not skip any of them, “he explained.

The expert’s statement runs counter to a recent US study published in the journal PLOS Biology in late February. The Vanderbit University researchers analyzed middle-aged and elderly individuals who were randomized, that is, divided into two groups. The two groups followed the same lunch and dinner hours: 12:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., respectively. In turn, the third meal of the day was different between the groups: in half of the individuals, breakfast was at 8 a.m. and in the other half, a dinner at 10 p.m. The caloric value and nutritional quality of the food for dinner and breakfast were the same in both groups.

With that, the research concluded that people who ate their last meal of the day at 10 p.m. and didn’t eat breakfast had a slower metabolism (measured by calorimetry) and a greater desire to eat foods high in sugar and fat throughout the day. This result was obtained compared to the people who ate breakfast and ate the last time before 6 p.m.

“In those days of quarantine, when many people are at home, it is essential to try to maintain a diet and also a sleep routine. The Vanderbit University study comes to attest to the importance of a good breakfast with a variety of nutrients, so that we can more easily balance our foods throughout the day and not reduce basal metabolism. Without a doubt, this is an important step to control weight ”, emphasized the expert.
