24-year-old athlete was quickly spotted on the field and sent to a stable hospital

Midfielder Alex Apolinário, a former Cruzeiro youth player, suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest during a match between Alverca and União de Almeirim, from Portugal’s 3rd soccer division. Quickly, the player was also seen on the grass by the club’s health professionals, who were using a defibrillator.

After stabilizing, Alex, 24, was transferred to Vila Franca de Xira Hospital and is still recovering. The incident occurred in the 27th minute of the first half, when the player fell onto the field. During the service, athletes from both teams held a prayer wheel.

In a statement released on social networks, Alverca, current center of the field, thanked the support of the Firefighters and the ambulance that quickly arrived at the stadium to provide first aid. “We wish and pray for the complete rehabilitation of Alex Apolinário,” he concluded.

Alex Apolinário came to Cruzeiro U23 in 2015 and served on the team for two years. Before, he worked at Botafogo in Ribeirão Preto. In the blue professional team, he scored almost 20 goals and was loaned to Atlético-PR in 2018. Later, he was hired by the Portuguese team to play in the local championship.
