Children in their teens can be challenging for their parents, as they are in a critical period of many physical and psychological changes, and of social and emotional construction. “It is a stage in which they see their body transform and face hormonal changes that affect their state of mind and their state of mind,” explains pediatrician Talita Rizzini, coordinator of pediatrics at Hospital Leforte, in São Paulo. Additionally, there is a tendency to separate from parents and family, and a preference for staying with friends. The desire for independence and autonomy is more present, characteristics that are related to the normal adolescence syndrome.

In times of confinement, when family life intensifies and can generate conflicts, it is important for the family to find ways to maintain a dialogue with children, so that this experience is more profitable.

“Rather than viewing this important stage of life as ‘boredom,’ let’s rescue the attention, and also the patience, that went into the baby and toddler,” says Talita.

As they are older and can make their own decisions, the specialist says that it is common for parents not to worry so much about feeding, stimulating and developing their children during adolescence.

“However, the foundations of good health must be sown in childhood and continued to be cultivated in adolescence for good fruit to be reaped in adulthood and old age, as many senile diseases can be prevented with style of life”. healthy, “says Talita.

This is what a recent study shows, with almost 150 thousand adolescents in Europe and North America, which showed that only 4.4% of girls and 4.7% of boys have a healthy lifestyle at 11 years. This rate worsens, 0.85% and 1.5%, respectively, at 15 years of age. The healthy lifestyle in this research meant doing some physical activity daily, spending less than two hours a day in front of the screens, having a daily habit of consuming fruits and vegetables, not consuming alcohol or tobacco products.

“These are alarming results and show that we are not paying due attention to a being who is still developing and who must be directed to make good decisions,” warns the pediatrician. She says that a careful look from parents is needed to encourage autonomy and independence in their children, but without leaving good habits behind, which could cause losses in adulthood. “No matter how big they are, they still need the help of an adult to organize their lives in a healthy way,” recommends Talita. And if there is a more specific need for care, it is worth seeking help with a hebiatrist, a pediatrician specializing in adolescence.

The adolescent stage is the stage of the child’s second birth. “Therefore, I reiterate my invitation for parents to welcome this phase of life as a fascinating period of transition for a developing human being, but one who still needs great care.”
