The governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), today avoided announcing more restrictive measures to control the covid-19 pandemic, a day after the state reached a new record of daily deaths. In addition to maintaining the rules of the red phase of the São Paulo Plan, Doria announced a next stage of vaccination against the disease caused by the new coronavirus. From the 22nd, older people between 72 and 74 years old will be immunized.

Currently, the state still vaccinates people aged 77 years or older, but the government of São Paulo already announced this week that people aged 76 and 75 will begin to be vaccinated next Monday (15). In the capital, the city of São Paulo will resume vaccination in the drive-thru system, which had been suspended last Saturday (6).

Record of deaths and collapse

With only essential activities in operation since the weekend and almost 20 health units with 100% occupancy of the beds of the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) for covid-19 in the state, Doria was expected to announce new measures restrictive, such as restrictions on hours of operation. trade operation that remains open. But the governor chose to postpone the possibility of announcing a purple phase of the São Paulo Plan, which has been under study since the end of February.

With the increase in hospitalizations, the increasing pressure on the health system makes medical care increasingly threatened.

The state already has 19 collapsed health units, with 100% of the ICU beds for covid occupied. Until yesterday, six other hospitals also registered an occupancy of more than 95%. Yesterday there were 517 deaths from covid in 24 hours.

In Taboão da Serra, in Greater São Paulo, the City Council reported that 11 patients died waiting for an ICU bed, after not being able to transfer them to other health units in the state.

Tragedy announced

It is not the first time that Doria has postponed tightening traffic restrictions. For at least two months, members of the Coronavirus Contingency Center in São Paulo have been warning the state government about a growing worsening of pandemic data and the possibility of a collapse in the health system.

In the same period, according to the report, the committee suggested, in virtually every meeting with the governor, that traffic be reduced to the maximum, adopting the red phase throughout the state or even a curfew after 10 a.m. night.

The guidelines were welcomed, but watered down by the governor. An example was the adaptation of the “curfew” to “moderation”, announced at the end of February.

The main arguments of the government for not adopting a strict measure such as confinement would be the pressure from the commercial sector, which involves from merchants to farmers in the interior of São Paulo, and the lack of emergency aid to the population, which was unable to. work and therefore would not have money to feed.

The official response, then, has been the creation of new beds. Last Monday (8), Doria’s management promised to open 280 emergency beds for covid-19 at the end of March, which will be installed in 11 health units in the capital, on the coast and inland, considered as new hospitals campaign. Today 338 new beds have been announced, 167 for the ICU.

The São Paulo government has also called on the population to follow the rules of the red phase, in addition to reinforcing the importance of wearing masks. Since last Saturday, only essential activities can function throughout the state, which sees the worsening of the pandemic mainly driven by the transmission of the Manaus variant of the coronavirus, considered more contagious.
