The owner of the animal came to his residence shortly after the episode. According to Law No. 9.605 / 1998, on environmental crimes, cases of abuse can result in detention from three months to a year, in addition to a fine. The penalty can be increased from one sixth to one third if the animal dies. However, it is unlikely that the person responsible will be arrested. Offenses with sentences of up to two years are considered to have less offensive potential and the sentence is generally converted to service.
Law for dogs and cats
Last month, President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) promulgated a bill that increases penalties for animal abuse, but the text only contemplates attacks against dogs and cats.
