With almost 100% occupancy in ICUs, the Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo announced on Friday (24) that it will open new beds next week and will have the help of 15 private doctors until the end of the pandemic period. .
External assistance will come from the Rede D’Or of hospitals, which announced the transfer of 15 company intensive care doctors to work in HC, which is the largest hospital complex for victims of Covid-19 in São Paulo, with 900 beds. for disease. .
“HC is a fantastic hospital, but at a time like this, the most difficult part is the staff. So we are going to assign more or less 15 professionals from the UCI, in addition to the professionals who will work in normal beds, “said Rede D’Or CEO, oncologist Paulo Hoff.
According to the clinical director of the Hospital das Clínicas, Eloísa Bonfá, the entity has sought alliances and creative solutions to try to expand the hospital’s service capacity.
“To establish new beds, we are accepting everything. But what we really need is help with human resources, because the rest of the population and companies are helping to search. The fans, which is something that is missing a lot, monitor, we are obtaining it through donations. People are moving, Poli-USP is building fans. But human resources, which is the most precious thing, we need help to bring them here, “he says.
ICU bed capacity
The HC complex has 900 beds for the exclusive treatment of patients like Covid-19. About 200 beds are in the ICU and at least 181 of them are occupied with hospitalized patients in serious health conditions.
“They are very serious patients, very serious indeed. People who stay at home allow us to avoid the collapse of the system. When we say that we are approaching 200 beds, it means that we need time to build another 100 beds. If people start to leave home and everyone gets sick at the same time, we will hardly be able to provide the necessary assistance to everyone, ”says Eloísa Bonfá.
Rede D’Or’s help is associated with Fundação Bradesco and refers only to intensive care physicians. HC is running out of time to try to hire nurses, nursing technicians and physical therapists, who form a complete ICU care team.
“The medical team is right. The perspective is to be able to assemble this team in a week or less, with the rest of the professionals we need. We are looking for ways to accomplish this through numerous skills for technicians and nursing. We are closing a team block, we can already open a new batch of 10 ICUs. The intent is to reach at least 300 ICU beds, “he says.

Despite the race against time, the Hospital das Clínicas celebrates the work done by professionals who already work at the Central Institute, helping patients infected with the coronavirus.
“We have a discharge of 35% of our patients and we have a mortality rate of around 7%, which is fantastic for so many very serious patients. In order for us to see more people, we all need to understand that these heroes are risking their lives and that the rest need to stay home so that we can have even more good results, ”says Bonfá.
