São Paulo Governor João Doria (PSDB) announced today that infectologist David Uip, coordinator of the Coronavirus Contingency Center in the state, will be out of function for a few days due to health problems.

Doria read a letter in which Uip explains that he felt ill last Wednesday (6) and had cardiac and clinical changes. Despite feeling better, you will be out on medical advice.

Uip was already out of the team for a few days because he was infected with the coronavirus, but he recovered and resumed his activities. The director of the Butantan Institute, Dimas Covas, will assume the position of Uip while he is absent.

David Uip was diagnosed with covid-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus, on March 23. Recovered, he returned to coordinate the Coronavirus Contingency Center in São Paulo on April 6.

At that time, Uip avoided answering whether or not she used hydroxychloroquine during her period with covid-19. But, after confirming a prescription with chloroquine, he even criticized President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party), who questioned on social networks whether the infectious diseases doctor from João Doria’s team (PSDB) had taken the drug.

“President, I respected your right not to disclose your diagnosis, respect the right not to disclose my treatment. My privacy has been invaded. The privacy of my clinic has been invaded. I will take appropriate legal measures to invade my privacy and my patients,” he said at the time.

Read the full letter published today by David Uip:

Last Wednesday, May 6, I felt uncomfortable, with cardiac and clinical changes. After the medical evaluation, I started a battery of tests for diagnostic clarification.

Today I feel better, but, for medical advice, I will need to be away from my activities in the Coronavirus Contingency Center of the State of São Paulo for a few days.

It saddens me that, in this difficult time of crisis, of a very serious pandemic, which has caused so many deaths in our State and has caused great suffering among Brazilians in São Paulo who have lost family and dear friends, as they were unable to be physically present.
However, I am fully convinced that São Paulo is on the right track. And it’s saving lives.

The collaboration of my 15 colleagues at the Contingency Center, made up of doctors, scientists, virologists, teachers and researchers, has been fantastic.

The union of the efforts of this group of volunteers has unequivocally contributed to define strategies both to face the epidemic and to help the population in the public health network.

I thank Governor João Doria and the Secretaries of State and Lieutenant Governor Rodrigo García for all the support and support they have given us.

I am temporarily away and waiting to be recovered, to resume my contribution to the Coronavirus Contingency Center, the São Paulo State Health Committee.

Thank you very much and see you soon.
