The Municipal Health Secretariat of Curitiba (PR) defined, together with the partner hospitals of the SUS (Unified Health System) of the city, the temporary suspension of elective surgeries, which are not considered urgent. The measure is justified by the increase in new cases of covid-19, which may lead to an increase in hospitalizations.

Since last week, the capital of Paraná has been registering a growth in the registration of new infections, which today is around 750 per day. Yesterday, according to the latest data published by the city, the number of active cases reached 6,849.

“With the experience on the behavior of the disease and with new cases, it is possible that we will have an increase in hospitalizations next week. [suspensão de cirurgias eletivas] It is a precaution, so that we have a little more covid-19 beds available and that no one is left without assistance, ”said Márcia Huçulak, Secretary of Health.

Increase in AUP

After a sequence of falls in hospitalizations, to the point that 72 ICU-SUS beds exclusively for covid-19 were deactivated, the movement of patients with respiratory symptoms in the nine UPA (Emergency Care Units) has been increasing, especially after the 2nd from November.

In the week of November 2 to 8, 6,752 symptoms of covid-19 were treated in the UPAs. The following week, between the 9th and the 15th, there were 8,300 calls. “This increased demand for the service will undoubtedly be reflected in more hospitalizations, so we are already getting ahead of ourselves,” added Márcia.
