RIO – The current mayor of Rio, Marcelo Crivella (Republicans), and his predecessor in office, Eduardo Paes (DEM), were the main targets of the other nine candidates for mayor in the first debate of the dispute, held this Thursday at night by Banda.

Criticized by the other applicants, Crivella resorted to the strategy of association with President Jair Bolsonaro and attacked issues such as “gender ideology”, the legalization of drugs and the performance of left-wing parties.
Although he avoided direct confrontation, Crivella also exchanged criticism with Paes, who chose to do double duty with candidates opposed to the current administration. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, health was one of the most explored topics in the questions: while Crivella sought to present numbers of purchases of hospital equipment, such as respirators and tomographs, his opponents criticized the number of deaths from coronavirus and reports of lack. of doctors and supplies during the current management.
In the first block of questions among the candidates, Crivella addressed Renata Souza (PSOL) and said that if the opponent won the elections, there would be a “gay kit in schools”, repeating a false information raised by Bolsonaro in the presidential campaign 2018. Crivella also defended municipal management in the fight against the pandemic.

– We bought 800 respirators last year. I have a CT scanner in Cidade de Deus, in Maré. We lost 8 thousand people (there were 11 thousand dead in the city), but none due to lack of equipment, doctors or medicines. What is important to say is that, if the PSOL wins the elections, our children will have (in schools) something that they should have at home, which is sexual orientation – said Crivella.
In response, Renata attacked the current mayor’s management in the areas of health and education:
– I’m talking about people who died and you’re talking about what the teacher will teach at school. The teacher must have a pedagogical debate and with autonomy. Instead of talking about gender ideology, where is the children’s lunch?

In the second block of questions, Luiz Lima (PSL) addressed the mayor, citing the investigation into the “Guardianes de la Crivella”, a group of city officials aimed at shaming journalists and patients at the door of public hospitals .
– You have tutors who earn R $ 4,000 to intimidate people. These are small examples that save us resources. We cannot spend more than we raise. If you do party politics within the government, it doesn’t work, said the PSL candidate.
Lima, who has been contesting the Bolsonarist electorate with Crivella, sought to build a discourse of austerity in spending and the appointment of technical personnel in secretaries, similar to the one Bolsonaro himself used in his campaign. Crivella, for his part, questioned more than once the loyalty of Lima, a federal deputy who remained in the PSL, to Bolsonaro, who left the party at the end of 2019.
In his first participation in the debate, Eduardo Paes (DEM) doubled down with Benedita da Silva (PT) to criticize Crivella’s health management. The former mayor sought to praise his own administration, always making the reservation that “it was not perfect, but it was better than now.” At another time, responding to a question from the PSOL candidate, Paes also criticized the management of municipal transport.
– Crivella is a terrible manager. What happens today in transport is a complete abandonment, lack of supervision. We will make the BRT work again – he said.
Although he tried to focus on the current mayor, Paes was also targeted by Renata Souza and Martha Rocha (PDT). Renata cited the complaint of the former president of Fetranspor, Lélis Teixeira, who cited donations through box two for Paes’ electoral campaigns, which he denies. The PSOL candidate also recalled the transfer of families from Vila Autódromo to build the Olympic Park.
In two tougher clashes between Paes and Martha, which even had polls to form a slate before the elections, the PDT candidate recalled an episode in which the former mayor referred in a sexual way to a neighbor of popular housing.
– That way of being mocking and disrespectful, the carioca can’t take it anymore. I mean your movie is not worth being re-done. You left this city, with all the investment, without being a benchmark in health and education – Martha criticized.
Paes tried to bring the opponent into the government Sérgio Cabral, recalling his time as head of the Civil Police, and stated that she “did not study and did not understand” the mayor’s office numbers.
Clarissa Strikes Back
Eduardo Bandeira de Mello (Rede), Fred Luz (Novo), Glória Heloíza (PSC) and Paulo Messina (MDB) avoided participating in confrontations and tried to exchange questions among themselves on issues such as sustainability, education and finances in the municipality. At the end of the second block of questions, Luz was severely criticized by Clarissa Garotinho (PROS) after associating her with her father, former Governor Anthony Garotinho. Like Benedita, Martha and Glória Heloíza, who made repeated speeches directed at the female electorate, Clarissa affirmed that the opposition woman demonstrated “to despise the history of women.”
– You come with that New party shell, but the truth is, you are a male who likes to despise the history of women. Just because I am young and female, do you think I have no right to build my own story? I ask.
