Just one day after giving birth to triplets, self-employed Caroline Grimaldi Gotardo, 39, had to be intubated due to complications from Covid-19. He is in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of the Hospital Regional do Oeste, in Chapecó, 558 kilometers from Florianópolis.

The babies were born prematurely at 30 weeks on February 24 and also remain in the ICU to gain weight. One of them tested positive for COVID-19, but has now recovered from the disease. The family still has three other children. (read below).

According to Caroline’s husband, self-employed worker Irno Gotardo, 43, the family was able to see the babies only yesterday afternoon after the medical team authorized the visits. The trio must stay in the hospital until they gain the necessary weight. The mother, on the other hand, has a stable state of health, but does not yet have a discharge prognosis.

“His lungs are showing signs of improvement, but his kidneys don’t seem to match yet. His condition is stable, thank God. The babies are heroes and they are very strong. Two of them were negative for covid-19 and the other is Ya everyone is reacting well, but we remain vigilant because hospitalization is in the ICU ”, stressed the father.

The freelancer says the couple discovered the pregnancy in August 2020. With three other children, both were surprised by the pregnancy. The shock was even greater when they performed the first ultrasounds.

“For us it was a surprise because we hadn’t planned it, but it’s okay, and we moved on. At the first ultrasound, another surprise came. They were twins, something we never imagined. After 15 days, the second exam showed triplets. Suddenly From the age of three we began to have six children ”, he recalls.

The family lives in Maravilha, in the western region of Santa Catarina. Since Caroline’s pregnancy was considered risky, she needed to dedicate herself to caring for the pregnancy with routine visits to monitor the babies’ development.

When she sought medical attention on February 8 at the HRO in Chapecó, she needed to be hospitalized for daily exams. He returned to Maravilha on the 15th and felt the first symptoms of covid-19 in less than 24 hours.

The return to HRO occurred on February 22 due to the advancement of symptoms caused by the new coronavirus.

“On the 24th, she was at home and I received the news that a cesarean section was performed due to the difficulty of the pregnancy. A day later, she was intubated because it was recommended to save her life,” says the husband.

THE Twitter contacted the human rights officer to find out about Caroline’s clinical status. The unit responded that “it does not report the health status of patients with covid-19. Only the doctor responsible for the ICU transmits information, solely and exclusively, to a relative registered at the time of hospitalization.”
