The couple Lauany Viodres do Prado and Leonardo Gonçalves Cantieri were sentenced to 13 years in prison by the jury court on Thursday (10), for the death of the merchant Núbia Ribeiro, burned alive in Franca, in the interior of São Paulo, in September. 2017. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the crime was motivated by jealousy. Information is from G1.
The two have been in prison from the moment of the crime and, according to the sentence, must serve a closed sentence for double qualified homicide and concealment of a corpse. A third person, Ítalo Vinicius Neves, who is a friend of the two and would have helped in the crime, was convicted of simple homicide and is expected to serve a sentence of seven years and six months in a closed regime.
In the report, Leonardo’s lawyer, Rafael Souza Barbosa, said that he respects the court decision. Lauany’s defense attorney, José Antônio Abdala, said he will only comment on the sentence after analyzing it. Italo’s defense could not be reached for comment on the jury’s decision.
Before the start of the session, at the Forum de Franca, the victim’s mother, Tânia Aparecida Ribeiro, said that she was confident in the conviction, although she knew that the result would not return her daughter.
“My daughter was sentenced to death without having committed any crime. So, no matter what pen they take, it will be small compared to my pain, compared to Nubia’s pain, ”he said.
Five witnesses for the prosecution and nine for the defense were heard at the trial. The jury consisted of seven people, four men and three women.
After the testimonies of the witnesses and the work of the prosecution, the lawyers had about two hours to present their arguments. The jury subsequently announced the sentences.
The crime
According to the Public Ministry, Núbia Ribeiro was lured into an ambush and killed out of revenge. The prosecution claims that the crime was planned by Lauany after she discovered that her boyfriend, Leonardo, had had a brief romantic relationship with the victim while they were separated.
Núbia was found dead in the rural area of Patrocínio Paulista, 23 km from Franca. According to the Civil Police, she suffered head trauma and her body was partially burned while she was still alive.
According to the MP, on the day of the crime, Nubia met with Leonardo, at Lauany’s request. The two of them drove and Lauany was hiding in the trunk. On the way, he jumped into the back seat and hit Nubia on the head, who passed out.
The victim was reportedly taken to the home of Italo, a friend of the couple. From there, he drove with her in Leonardo’s car to the rural area of Patrocínio Paulista. Italo would have hit Nubia again on the head and then set her on fire.
In the process, the defendant presented different versions of the crime and Lauany gave three different testimonies, but denied his participation in the murder of the young woman.
Leonardo confessed to the crime, in addition to denouncing his friend and girlfriend. Italo admitted to taking Nubia’s car, but not knowing of the murder.
