Coronavirus: Osmar Terra quotes ‘only 10,000 dead’ and Mandetta counters: ‘They are not numbers’

Federal deputy Osmar Terra (MDB-RS), critical of social isolation measures, again stated that there is no evidence of the effectiveness of quarantine in combating the spread of the coronavirus. In contrast, the former Minister of Health, Luiz Henrique Mandetta (DEM-MS), declared that the measure is necessary despite the increase in cases and deaths.

“There are only 10,000 dead in this quarantine. It wouldn’t be worse if it wasn’t (isolated), only if there was an earthquake. There is no study,” Terra said in a debate organized by Globonews.

Mandetta, in response, stated that it is a new disease that directly attacks the health system, referring to the wear and tear suffered by hospitals due to the demand for beds and respirators.

“If you have 10,000 cases, 50,000, and if you have more than 100,000, it will still be (isolation necessary),” said Mandetta, who also added that the numbers will continue to increase as long as there is no coronavirus vaccine.

Former Minister of Citizenship, Terra, who was once Rio Grande do Sul’s Secretary of Health, had previously said that covid-19 would not exceed the number of deaths from the H1N1 outbreak (at least 2,100 deaths in 2009). However, the deputy did not present any study to prove the claim.

The country today exceeded 10,000 coronavirus deaths, according to the latest bulletin presented by the Ministry of Health.

A former portfolio holder, Mandetta added: “Behind each of the 10,661 dead is a family. These are not numbers.”

“There are economists there who think it is best for all those who have to die soon to die so that the economy returns to normal. That is not the case,” said the former minister.
