As of May 1, International Workers’ Day, 34 health professionals died from Covid-19 in Rio. It was doctors, nurses and nursing technicians who took the risk to save lives and ended up being victims of the coronavirus.
These professionals often work without the proper equipment and suffer delayed care when infected.
Unions and professional councils have mobilized to demand better working conditions, including by going to court, but there is still no guarantee of safety.
To honor these heroes, RJ1 listened to relatives, friends, and co-workers of the victims, who represent all those who died to save lives.
Alan Patrick, 38, nursing technician
“Today, Labor Day, Labor Day, May 1, 2020, I could only honor my son by talking about his work,” said Regina Evaristo, Alan’s loving mother.
“Alan always liked what he does, he always liked being a nursing technician, even to the point of attending nursing school. So caring for him and taking care of him was of utmost importance. So today, for sure, Alan he would be working, because he said ‘the day of the worker, my mother, the day of the work, is the day of the work. And many people need my work’ “.
Alan worked at the Carlos Chagas Hospital, in Marechal Hermes, Northern Zone of Rio. He had no chronic illness. He died on April 22.
“Anita was a very dedicated technique, very loving to her patients, to our patients,” said Aleandra Brito, Anita’s co-worker.
“The day I found out that Anita was with her covid, she gave me a very tight chest because she was 63 years old and I thought ‘OMG, will she get over it?’. What hurts the most is knowing that nobody gave Anita confidence because of the alerts that made it not right. He even asked for help. Therefore, I kindly ask that everyone pay attention to the alerts that we health professionals are giving, because we, who are on the front line, know exactly every feeling and every fear that each one of us feels. ”
Anita de Souza Viana became ill and could not find a bed even in the hospital where she worked, Ronaldo Gazolla, who is a reference in the treatment of patients with coronavirus. A vacancy arose at the Zilda Arns Hospital in Volta Redonda, but to no avail. She died shortly after the transfer.
Tânia Mara, 54 years old, nurse.
“My mother was a loving woman, she was a warrior woman, she was very dedicated to work, she was dedicated to her family,” said Tainá Carvalho, the daughter of Tânia.
“She accompanied me in everything, she was always a very present mother and a nurse who encouraged others at work. She arrived and everyone felt her joy. She came home and told me how busy the day was, but when she saw the smile at the end of the day they made my heart happy. ”
Tânia Mara Carvalho was a nurse in the delivery room of the Federal Hospital in Bonsucesso. He died on Thursday (30).
Daniele, 41, nursing technician.
“It has been very difficult, but today I want to pay tribute to my friend, a great friend, the warrior Daniele Costa, who died in our favor, doing everything possible all the time,” said Fabiana Romariza, Danielle’s co-worker.
“My friend was happy, she got the job she wanted so much in Samu. She was very, very happy. However, this damn virus ended her life. Friend, I will not stop fighting for you, you can be sure” Friend! Take care of us up there! That we, down here, continue fighting for what you fought so much. ”
Danielle Costa died on Monday (27). The nursing technician worked at UPA in Austin and had gotten a place to work at Samu. He complained about the care at the Hospital da Posse, in Nova Iguaçu, Baixada Fluminense.
