Ciro Gomes does not currently hold a political position, but he supports the candidacy for mayor of Fortaleza de Sarto Nogueira (PDT), who also tested positive for the disease.
Candidate Sarto has been campaigning from home via video since he confirmed he contracted the disease on October 5.
The governor of Ceará, Camilo Santana, a political ally of Ciro Gomes and Sarto Nogueira, tested positive for Covid-19 two days later, on October 7. Sarto and Camilo say they are fine and are taking care of themselves at home.
