The Military Police of Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo, delivered hundreds of donations this morning that were received after a campaign promoted by the corporation to help the child who was found in a barrel on Saturday (30). The boy is in a municipal shelter accompanied by psychologists.
The mobilization of police officers from the 2nd Company of the 35 BPM / I (Interior Military Police Battalion) began the same day that the child was rescued by four PM teams from the house where he lived in Jardim Itatiaia, on the outskirts of the city.
In total, 276 toys, 632 items of clothing were donated: blouses, T-shirts, pants, shorts, two video games, a hair clipper, four school bags, 29 pairs of shoes, a teddy bear, 10 comics and two books.
According to Captain José Antônio Pereira Júnior, the donations came from all over the country. “It was fantastic. It surprised us and made us very happy. Honestly, I never saw anything like it. It’s moving,” he said.
The police officer also said that the colleagues who went to deliver the donations were excited. “It is something even spiritual to do good. I, in particular, hope it is a symbol. Because many children are abused, they are abandoned. It is good that it is a symbol,” he said.
The prime minister did not deliver the donations directly to the child, in the shelter where he has been since yesterday. The gifts were left in one of the Campinas Social Assistance centers, which will be sent by a team to make the final delivery together with psychologists. The decision was made to preserve the child.
Recovery process
At the shelter, a medical team has been monitoring his health. Despite the information previously disclosed that he would only be discharged when he reached 35 kg – he reached 27 kg on Saturday – the Twitter found that his recovery was faster than expected by the doctors themselves.
Although the City Council has reported that it will not reveal any information about the patient’s clinical situation, the report consulted nutritionists and pediatricians to question the procedure adopted in such cases. According to Gabriela Murteira, pediatrician at Hospital Vera Cruz, in Campinas, weight gain is the result of proper nutrition.
“The focus is not on weight, but on stabilizing metabolic and nutritional status. Therefore, the team focused on assessing how your body reacts to the beginning of nutrition. For example, changes in electrolytes that can change the frequency cardiac, replacement of proteins that change the distribution of fluids in the body. It is a daily and multidisciplinary monitoring, “he said.
The doctor explained that in cases of severe malnutrition, the patient can receive solid food, but it depends on how the body reacts. According to the Civil Police, the boy ate banana peels and raw corn flour. It was not the ideal diet, according to Erica Blascovi, a clinical nutritionist and an undergraduate and graduate professor at Unimetrocamp. But she thinks it could be worse.
“Raw cornmeal has some carbohydrates, which is an energy nutrient. Banana peel has a little potassium and a little magnesium. It wasn’t enough to maintain good nutrition, especially since you got that to eat,” he explained. .
The human body can support up to 20 days in absolute fasting, according to clinical nutritionist and functional nutrition specialist Giovana Pardini Pascoli. The assessment is that the child survived for so long by eating something, even if it was precarious.
“If the person eats, even with few things, it is possible to survive, but with all the consequences that malnutrition will bring. They could die, of course, from any disease they contract,” he adds.
