The Public Ministry and the Campinas City Council opened two investigation processes to determine flaws in the conduct of the case of the 11-year-old boy found on Saturday (3) inside a barrel in Jardim Itatiaia. According to the agencies, there were important failures of the public entities in charge of evaluating the physical and psychological conditions of the child.

The MP process was initiated by the Childhood and Youth promoter Andrea Santos Souza. He will not give interviews about the case yet until he has all the pertinent information, but the report found that the objective of the MP is to see to what extent the bodies linked to the City Council, such as Caps (Psychosocial Care Center), Creas (Reference Center) of Social Assistance) and the Council of Guardians itself knew the situation of the child, and what were the behaviors adopted with the family

The Public Ministry will also investigate the behavior of the family and whether in recent months measures have been requested to protect the minor.

Today, Mayor Dário Saadi (Republicans) said he gave 24 hours for all relevant agencies and secretariats to deliver a report on the assistance provided to the family.

“As a parent, I am shocked and outraged. Since yesterday I had conversations with the secretariats and asked for a report to get an idea of what happened in the last days and months, in addition to opening an investigation process. I know when this child was accompanied. This child was treated for organs and I want to know what happened ”, he explained.

The Council of Guardians confirmed that the minor had been cared for for at least a year and that the agency knew that the family situation was not ideal, but ensures that it was unaware of the extreme fact.

“We were aware of the vulnerability of the family, so there was a support network that accompanied them, social work and health. At no time did the reports sent point to a situation like this ”, explained the guardian counsel Moisés Sesion.

Fruit peels and raw cornmeal

The Civil Police reported today that the boy had been in the barrel for at least a month – they had already reported that he had seen New Year’s Eve through the hole in a wall, and that he was eating fruit peels (especially bananas) and raw cornmeal.

In testimony, the father informed the police that the son was aggressive, agitated and ran away from home, and that the reason for putting him in the barrel is to “educate” him. The child remains hospitalized at the Ouro Verde Hospital in Campinas.

According to the medical team, when he was hospitalized on Saturday he weighed 27 kg, in a situation of extreme malnutrition. Her current weight was not disclosed, but her health is considered “good and evolving.”
