The survey carried out by Ibope at the request of the CNI confirms the situation detected in surveys by other institutes: in terms of popularity, Bolsonaro is experiencing the best moment since his inauguration. In nine months, his approval rate jumped 11 points, from 29% to 40%. The detail of the investigation reinforces the impression that the emergency aid that the government had to pay to 65 million Brazilians also fed the image of the president during the pandemic.

Ibope evaluated the government’s performance in nine sectors. The Bolsonaro administration only got a blue mark in one of these sectors: public safety was approved by 51% of those surveyed and disapproved by 45%. In the fight against hunger, the crown valley of R $ 600 – now reduced to R $ 300 – produced a balance. There was 48% approval and 49% disapproval.

In the other seven areas, the government received a red note: Environment (57% failure, 37% approval); Health (55% failure, 43% approval); Education (52% failure, 44% approval); fight against unemployment (60% negative evaluation, 37% approval); fight against inflation (56% to 38%), interest rate (64% to 30%), taxes (67% to 28%).

These results explain the president’s obsession with putting something in place of emergency aid as of January. Ibope reveals that one of the biggest increases in Bolsonaro’s popularity was recorded among voters with family incomes of up to minimum wage. The researchers took to the streets between September 17 and 20, a period in which the basic food basket was in great demand. It is important to note that the worst sectoral assessments were in areas administered by Minister Paulo Guedes: unemployment, inflation, interest and taxes. Bolsonaro’s political project continues to depend on the economy. Re-election passes through the Ipiranga Post.
