BRASÍLIA – President Jair Bolsonaro officially announced his support for the re-election of Rio de Janeiro Mayor Marcelo Crivella (Republicans) on Thursday. Bolsonaro had already made gestures to Crivella, but had not yet formalized the support. According to Extra columnist Berenice Seara, Crivella will meet Bolsonaro on Friday morning for breakfast and to record a supporting video.
– He ended now with a name that is controversial, because Rio de Janeiro is always controversial. I’m here with Crivella. I have known him for a long time. He was a federal deputy with me, then he became a senator, mayor of Rio de Janeiro – Bolsonaro said, during a live broadcast on social networks.
Analytical: With support for Crivella, Bolsonaro runs the risk of being the main loser in 2020
Bolsonaro recalled that Crivella served for eight years in the Army and that, as a senator, he was the author of a proposal that allowed health professionals in the Armed Forces to accumulate civilian positions. But he stressed that he was asking for a vote “for the administration there in Rio de Janeiro.”
Then the president made an indirect reference, without naming names, to Crivella’s main opponents: state deputy Martha Rocha (PDT), who grew and tied numerically with the current mayor, according to the latest Datafolha poll, and former Mayor Eduardo Paes, who is leading the investigation.
Regarding Martha, Bolsonaro cited the possibility that Ciro Gomes, one of the main sponsors of his candidacy, occupy a position in his administration.

– We know that there are two more names competing. One there, who belongs to a party X, the guy named Ciro Gomes said that if he wins, he will be head of his Civil House. Terrible, right.
Regarding Paes, Bolsonaro adopted a more friendly tone and said that he is a “good administrator”, but stressed that he prefers the current mayor.
– And the other one that you also know is a good administrator, but I’m staying here with Crivella. There is not much controversy, no. If you don’t want to vote for him, rest assured. We are not going to create controversy, fight each other. I also respect your candidates.

Earlier this month, GLOBO showed that the leaders of the central parties, which today form part of the base of government in Congress, have been working to bring the Bolsonaro family closer to Paes.
Another candidate who sought Bolsonaro’s support is Congressman Luiz Lima (PSL), affiliated with the former president’s party. Luiz Lima, however, was not mentioned in Thursday’s broadcast.
During the broadcast, Bolsonaro also declared his support for four other mayoral candidates: Celso Russomanno (Republicans) in São Paulo, Bruno Engler (PRTB) in Belo Horizonte, Ivan Sartori (PSD) in Santos, and Coronel Menezes (Patriota) in Manaus . The president had expressed his support for all of them. Captain Wagner (PROS), whom the president had also expressed his support for, was not summoned this time.
Bolsonaro also declared his support for the councilman candidates. Among them, his son Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicans), a candidate in Rio de Janeiro. His ex-wife Rogério Bolsonaro, who also competes in Rio for the same party, was not mentioned. In São Paulo, for example, the president summoned two candidates for councilors.
In Porto Alegre, instead of supporting a candidate, Bolsonaro criticized Manuela D’Ávila (PCdoB), who leads the polls. The president focused his criticism on Manuela’s party.
– Do you have a PCdoB candidate ahead of you? Think of the consequences. See what this party represents, the problems that this party creates for the traditional Brazilian family – he said. – It is an appeal that I make to Porto Alegre. I will not name anyone, you are free to vote. Now, to vote for a PCdoB candidate, I think that is the end of the problem.
