President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) affirmed today, in a military act in Rio, that “when the State advances in individual rights and freedoms, it will hardly go backwards.” Although he did not make direct mention of the vaccine against covid-19, the president is critical of the possible mandatory immunization, defended by the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), his political opponent.
“History shows us: when the State advances in individual rights and freedoms, it will hardly go backwards. Don’t let panic take over. Our freedom is priceless. It is worth more than our own life, ”said the president today. Military graduation ceremony at the Naval School in Rio de Janeiro.
Bolsonaro and members of his government have been involved in a dispute over research for the development of an immunizer against the coronavirus in recent months.
In October, Doria even said that vaccination against the new coronavirus in São Paulo will be mandatory, except for people who have a restriction endorsed by a doctor.
Next Wednesday (16), the STF will judge two actions that discuss mandatory vaccination against covid-19.
Despite statements against mandatory immunization, it was Bolsonaro himself who sanctioned law 13,979 / 20, which provides for the possibility that public authorities force the population to be vaccinated.
Before today’s statement on the possible advance of the State in individual rights and freedoms, Bolsonaro read a verse from Proverbs that says: “If you show yourself weak on the day of anguish, your strength is small.” During the speech to the graduates, he emphasized discipline, hierarchy and patriotism, and mentioned that the experiences and values learned in the Army helped him “achieve various goals in life”, such as being President of the Republic.
Bolsonaro has been accompanied by military ministers, such as Bento Albuquerque (Mines and Energy), Eduardo Ramos (Government Secretariat), Braga Neto (Civil House), Augusto Heleno (Institutional Security Office) and Fernando Azevedo (Defense), and allied parliamentarians , as federal deputy Hélio Lopes (PSL-RJ).
After the ceremony, Bolsonaro greeted the graduates and their families. He did not wear a mask against the spread of the new coronavirus. Doctors recommend the protective object to prevent the virus from passing from one person to another through droplets in saliva from the mouth when speaking and the nose. Shaking hands is the main form of contagion, according to the Ministry of Health itself.
The commander of the Navy, Admiral of the Ilques Barbosa Junior Squadron, also intervened in the act. He said that the Force remains “firm” in the execution of strategic programs, such as the nuclear program, the construction of the nucleus of naval power, the achievement of full operational capacity and the expansion of logistics systems.
